Promoting Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) In The UK Modern Slavery Sector

The triple issue of race equality, diversity and inclusion in the UK Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking sector has been of concern for some time. Certainly at BASNET, this was the raison d’etre for our initial set up by the charity AFRUCA in 2019. This was based on the recognition that many communities who bear the impact of human trafficking and modern slavery in different parts of the country are often marginalised and excluded in efforts to address the problem. Even worse, very few numbers of Black and Minority Ethnic led charities are seen round the policy and decision-making tables, giving the impression that, overall, these communities are totally irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. In July 2020, our EDI working group was constituted following a sector-wide conference held by BASNET and the Human Trafficking Foundation. Its mandate was to produce a sector-wide action plan on Race Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion. The working group is made up of BASNET full members and Associate Members. Our Race EDI Action Plan was produced and launched in July 2021 to help address the gaps in race equality, diversity and inclusion the modern slavery and human trafficking sector.
